This event is the latest in a series of successful symposiums hosted by Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education and is not to be missed.

The 2023 Building Bridges Symposium will be on the theme of Community. It will feature special guest speakers and interactive workshops and panels.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Mario I Aguilar, Professor of Religion and Politics at the University of St Andrews. As he presents “Communities, Inter-religious Diversity and Indigenous Knowledge”.

Professor Aguilar is also Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion, and coordinator of the Transnational Research Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge (TReCIK) of which the Al-Maktoum College is an academic partner. His latest books include: The XIV Dalai Lama: Peacekeeping and Universal Responsibility (2021), Pope Francis: Journeys of a Peacemaker (2022), and Nadia Murad: Yazidi and World Peacemaker (2023).

Dr. Murat Siviloglu, Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Middle Eastern History. As he presents “Pax Ottomanica: Ottoman Harmony – Myth or Reality?”

Dr. Siviloglu earned his PhD in History from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Gates Scholar. His first book, ‘Emergence of Public Opinion: State and Society in the Late Ottoman Empire,’ was published by Cambridge University Press in 2018. Dr. Siviloglu’s research primarily explores the social and intellectual history of the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century. He is presently working on his next book, ‘Murder in the Harem: Life, Trial, and Death of Emine Hanim,’ set to be published by Indiana University Press.
